Update: 8:15 am

Weather has been a good help in keeping the Philpott Road fire in Kelowna’s Joe Rich fire stable.

” We definitely saw a drop in wind activity and temperatures out there on the fire, which contributed to a decrease in fire behaviour and we can confirm  that there was no significant spread on the fire last night.”

Justine Hunse with the BC Wildfire Service says the fire is still estimated at 380 hectares in size.

Twenty-three Wildfire Service crews are working with firefighters from from Joe Rich, Ellison, Kelowna, Peachland and Lake Country along with ten other fire departments throughout the interior.

A new assessment will be done this morning to determine how to attack the fire today.

“Some of the challenges the firefighters are going to be facing out there today are steep terrain. The fire is burning in a heavily timbered area. Firefighters are going to  be facing challenges associated with steep terrain and of course the return of or day time hot and dry conditions.”

Meanwhile, 1100 people from 474 properties remain evacuated from their homes.A decision on the possible opening Highway 33 is expected later this morning. For now, it remains closed from the Gallaghers Road intersection on the City of Kelowna to Big White Road.

No unexpected challenges overnight for firefighters on the Philpott Road wildfire in Kelowna’s Joe Rich area.

Cool overnight conditions and minimal wind kept the fire from progressing.

There is still thick smoke in the area but that is due to the lack of air movement overnight.

Fire fighters from Joe Rich, Ellison, Kelowna, Peachland and Lake Country along with ten other fire departments throughout the interior and the BC Wildfire Service monitored the 380-hectare fire overnight.

Even though this is an active wildfire, there are still no reports of any structures being impacted.

Eleven hundred people from 474 properties remain out of their homes this morning.

A decision on the possible opening Highway 33 is expected later this morning.

For now, it remains closed from the Gallaghers Road intersection on the City of Kelowna to Big White Road
