Drought Rating For Salmon River

Aug 24, 2017 | 7:21 AM

Provincial officials have given the Salmon River Watershed a level three drought rating.

The Ministry of Forests, Lands, Natural Resource Operations and Rural Development says water levels have been dropping during the high temperatures the last month.

It’s calling for voluntary water use reductions of 30% from all water users, including groundwater users.

Low water levels in the Salmon River are of particular concern because adult chinook salmon have recently migrated into the river in preparation for spawning.

Spawning chinook will be in the river through the month of September.

The Ministry also issued a level 4 rating for the Coldwater watershed near Merritt because conditions are extremely dry and flows have dropped to critical flow thresholds for fish populations.
