Coldstream Seeks Answers To ALR Questions

Jul 31, 2017 | 6:07 AM

The District of Coldstream is hoping to get a meeting with the Minister of Agriculture at this fall`s Union of BC Municipalities convention.

Mayor Jim Garlick says the district is trying to get some clarity on dealing with complaints linked to the Agricultural Land Reserve.

“Asking the Minister of Agriculture how to deal with things and what regulations they can put in place to help us out.”

Manure management is a long-time issue, especially when it comes leaching of nitrates into water sources.

Coldstream has been working with Spallumcheen on that.

“Because they also have concerns around nitrates in the Hullcar aquifer. We’ve talked with them about setting up with the Minister of Agricultural staff.”

Garlick is hoping other municipalities can get together on similar concerns to get the province to start looking into solutions on various issues

“And then the other ones we’ve had come up around the new crops that we have in and how it’s handled across the province because what we are finding out there are differences in wind machine, the distances from boundaries and that.”

Garlick says he`s hoping there`s no change in government before the UBCM conference because that would several municipal issues up in the air.
