Rail Trail Campfire
Some people still just don’t get it.
Firefighters from Coldstream were called out to the Okanagan Rail Trail about a kilometre down from the Kickwillie – Westkal area.
Fire Chief Dave Sturgeon explains what they found.
“There’s three individuals having a campfire. We attended with RCMP. All the individuals were issued a fine of one thousand 150 dollars each,” says Sturgeon.
Firefighters put out the campfire and three young men in their 20’s left, not really realizing that they had done anything wrong.
It’s absolutely unbelievable,” says the chief. “And in speaking with the individuals, just seems like some people don’t get it. They didn’t really seem too remorseful. People just don’t understand. I don’t know what it is, or what it’s going to take to get the point across to all these people.”
Sturgeon says firefighters pressed the men about what they were thinking.
“Their excuse was it was a small fire. Well, it takes just one ember. It doesn’t matter the size of the fire.”
Chief Sturgeon says fortunately the wind was light last night and heading into the lake.
But he says it wouldn’t have taken much for a fire to cause a lot of damage with all the homes in the area and the dry conditions.
