Stickle Road Protest Saturday

Jul 27, 2017 | 6:36 AM

The debate over Stickle Road is not over yet.

The Sustainable Environment Network Society is holding a rally Saturday morning against the province’s plan to extend the frontage road that parallels the highway through BX Creek Delta Park and connect it with 20th street.

“We’re taking this from the angle of protecting the wetland. Quite frankly, there’s lots of other reasons why this shouldn’t happen. safety being one of them. Cost being another. Accessibility for all users.”

Society member Keli Westgate feels there is still a number of people not happy with the plan.

“It was quite clear that the ministry was not listening, that the M-L-A was not listening and so I’m giving it one last kick at the can and seeing if we can get something that works for everyone.”

She says the wet spring we had provided an indication the plan just isn’t a good one.

“The fact that the wetland there got flooded this year was just another indication why that road shouldn’t be extended there and it may be that we’ve got one last window here to potentially stop something that many many locals are against.”

Westgate would like to see the idea of a roundabout looked at for that intersection.

The ministry has not yet awarded the contract for the 9.5 million dollar plan which calls for a ban on left turns from Stickle Road onto the highway

The rally will begin at the trail head behind RONA on 20th Street at 10 am
