Rail Trail Showcase

Jul 27, 2017 | 10:46 AM

Okanagan Rail Trail enthusiasts are anxious to show off what the trail could look like.

A one kilometre test section is open in Lake Country off McCarthy Road.

Trail Ambassador Brad Clements that area was chosen for a couple of reasons.

“One was ease of access and then the other one was much of the trail requires special permitting, environmental or ALR permits, these types of things, so this was a section of trail that didn’t require any permitting at all so we could just go in there and get at it.”

He says it gave the project team a good start.

“No one really knew what the dirt, rock and stuff was. It was kind of an area to go in and really confirm what is in there and more importantly confirm how do we transform it into a trail that will last a hundred years.”

Several layers of crush aggregate was used to surface the trail.

Brad Clements says more than half the money needed to complete project has been raised.

“Pushing close to five million, which is fantastic. As a result to that there’s about 4 million dollars of work that will be done through the fall and into the spring.”

An open house called the Rail Trail Showcase will be held there on Saturday from 9 am to noon.
