May 16, 2017 | 4:30 PM

Update May 16:

Due to the wet weather, the installation of Vernon’s first Rainbow Crosswalk has been re-scheduled for this Thursday from 4 to 9 p.m.

Preparation work will take place today from 5 to 8 p.m.

The eight-colour symbol will be painted on 30th Avenue between 33rd and 34th Streets in front of the former Liquidation World building.

That part of 30th Ave. will be closed to vehicles after 6 pm on Thursday.

May 15 story

Vernon will get its Rainbow Crosswalk this Wednesday.

The crosswalk is to be installed mid block on 30 Avenue, between 33 Street and 34 Street, on Wednesday, May 17, from 4 to 9 p.m.

Preparation work, including removal of the existing crosswalk and pressure washing, will take place on Tuesday from 5 to 8 p.m.

Travis Irmen, who proposed the crosswalk, says it’s gratifying to finally see it come to fruition

” It’s been quite a positive experience., Overall there was a little bit of resistance to it. But I kind of viewed any resistance to the crosswalk as more of a need as to why exactly we could have one here in Vernon.”

Irmen says he’s been told the city will be using thermoplastic paint.

“It’s going to last quite a while. It’s the same paint they used in Kelowna and their crosswalk looks great even after winter snowplows and everything go over it.”

The work on the crosswalk has been coordinated by Caliber Sports Systems.

The pavement marking materials were provided by HUB Surfacing Systems and installation will be performed by Square One Paving.
