Coldstream Considers Decibel Level

Coldstream Council is taking a look at the District’s noise bylaw.

On Monday night, council’s Committee of the Whole discussed bringing in decibel levels to manage the noise.

Mayor Jim Garlick says the Regional District did some noise testing in the industrial area of Lavington

“They were all within what we were considering for our bylaw. There was one area that was over by about one decibel.”

Staff will now go back and determine what level is appropriate and how to work with the public.

“What we would like to have is something we can use to sort of educate people on noise, and to allow them to understand what the levels are that we’re setting.”

The District would then work with any operation that is too loud to bring it within tolerable levels.

Garlick says there isn’t any one operation that is a concern.

“The industrial area in itself, just looking at the sound that comes out of there. That’s probably one of the main areas of concern because it’s ongoing.”

Complaints in recent months have centred on Coral Beach Farms, the Tolko sawmill, and even pickleball players in the Middleton Mountain area.
