OKIB Sets Up Command Centre
The Okanagan Indian Band is getting prepared for possible flooding in its area.
The band has established a command centre to monitor situations resulting from water flow.
“With a forecast of rain and rising temperatures over the next few days, OKIB is alerting residents living in the vicinity of creeks to prepare for increased water flows and rising lake levels beginning at noon on Thursday May 11,” says a band release.
The band says Okanagan Lake — currently at capacity — is expected to increase in water volume by 30 centimeters.
“Stay safe by keeping your distance from creek and river banks; these fast moving bodies of water are serious hazards,” says the release.
There are no current evacuation orders for OKIB locations, but residents living on reserve lands are encouraged to check the band website for updates at www.okib.ca.
