Bears Finding Food In Hills

May 3, 2017 | 6:06 AM

There’s been fewer bear complaints so far this spring — which is a by-product of the weather.

Frank Ritcey, provincial coordinator for Wildsafe BC, says the wet weather has provided lots of green grass in the hills for bears to eat.

“So the bears are up there eating that.”

However, Ritcey says residents should start their ‘Bear Aware’ preparations now.

“The big thing you want to do is make sure you’ve got your garbage secured until the day of collection. And the other thing a lot of people forget about is their bird feeders, and the bears really like to target those,” Ritcey tells Kiss FM.

Ritcey says most bears are motivated by finding food and aren’t aggressive.

“They are defensive at times, if you get too close to a sow with her cubs. That’s usually when we get conflict.”
