IH records 999 new COVID-19 cases, three deaths over weekend

Interior Health identified 999 new cases of COVID-19 and confirmed three deaths linked to the virus over the weekend.

The Ministry of Health announced Monday that since Saturday 3,287 new cases were confirmed in the province.

  • Feb. 4-5: 1,326 new cases
  • Feb. 5-6: 1,118 new cases
  • Feb. 6-7: 843 new cases

After calculating the three day total, IH had the most cases out of all health authorities.

Despite the large number of new infections, IH’s active case count fell to 7,530, down by 446 from Friday.

The provincial active case count also fell by 1,740 to 23,739 Monday.

The Ministry of Health reported 32 new deaths linked to the virus over the weekend, three of which were located in the Interior.

  • Fraser Health: nine
  • Vancouver Coastal Health: 14
  • Interior Health: three
  • Northern Health: one
  • Island Health: five

To date, a total of 2,707 British Columbians have died due to COVID-19, 325 of whom were from the Interior.

B.C.’s COVID-19 hospitalization rose by 41 to 987 Monday, with 141 British Columbians in intensive care. The Interior had 182 COVID-19 patients in hospital, 28 of whom were in intensive care.

The provincial vaccination rate for eligible residents aged five and over rose to 90.2 per cent for first doses and 84.6 per cent for second jabs Monday.

It was also noted that 93 per cent of British Columbians aged 12 and over have received their first jab, while 90.3 per cent were double dosed and 49.7 per cent had received a third shot.

Additionally, 93.4 per cent of adult British Columbians have received a first dose of a COVID-19 vaccine, 90.8 per cent have had two jabs and 52.9 per cent have received a third shot.

The province noted that 20 per cent of new cases identified between Jan. 28 and Feb. 3 were unvaccinated British Columbians, while 75.2 per cent were fully vaccinated. After adjusting for age, the unvaccinated accounted for 409.4 new cases per 100,000 population during that period, while the fully vaccinated accounted for 207.5 cases.

Between Jan.21 and Feb.3, those who had not received a COVID-19 vaccine made up 26.8 per cent of new hospitalizations, while the fully vaccinated accounted for 68.1 per cent of patients. After adjusting for age, the unvaccinated accounted for 92.5 patients per 100,000 population during that two week period, while the fully vaccinated accounted for 18.8 patients.

The province announced 11 new health-care facility outbreaks Monday, including the Pondarosa, Castleview Care Centre, Overlander Residential Care, Spring Valley Care Centre and Village by the Station in the Interior.

The outbreaks at Kelowna General Hospital, Marisopa Gardens, Heritage Square, Lakeview Lodge, Crestview Village and Summerland Senior’s Village were among the 12 declared over.

As of Monday there were 57 facilities considered active outbreak sites, 20 of which are located in the Interior.
