Armstrong has been recognized for its efforts to be a “green team” leader.

The North Okanagan city has been presented with the Environmental Sustainability Award from the Southern Interior Local Government Association (SILGA).

“This recognition underscores Armstrong’s strong commitment to environmental stewardship and sustainability. The city’s Council Strategic Plan places environmental stewardship as one of their strategic priorities, guiding projects and policies aimed at preserving and enhancing the local environment,” a city news release stated.

One of the city’s key initiatives is the Meighan Creek diversion project, which is aimed at preventing annual flooding issues.

“By constructing a stormwater bypass and implementing new culvert sections, Armstrong has bolstered its resilience against annual flooding and extreme rain events, safeguarding both property and community members,” the city said.

The community of just over 5,300 residents has also taken a proactive approach to water conservation, and has been named the most “water-wise” community in the Okanagan the last six years.

“Through increased incentives for water conservation year round, residential customers are encouraged to play an active role in mitigating climate change impacts,” the news release added.

The municipality’s new City Hall, which opened last year, was built with sustainable materials, energy-efficient heating and lighting systems, and a landscape design that reduces water use.

The city is also ‘driving’ down its greenhouse gas emissions, by moving to electric-powered equipment for its fleet. That includes the fully electric Ford F-150 Lightning pickup truck and a Zero Turn electric ride-on mower.

“Receiving the SILGA Environmental Sustainability Award is a testament to Armstrong’s dedication to environmental stewardship,” Mayor Joe Cramer said. “This recognition highlights our community’s efforts to protect our natural resources and build a more sustainable future for generations to come.”

Cramer added the award creates ‘immense pride,” as environmental sustainability is a core value and guiding principle in the community.
