Shatzko Running For Seat

Amanda Shatzko is taking a run at local politics.

The Vernon area resident is seeking the director’s position for Electoral Area C of the Regional District of North Okanagan, representing the BX- Silver Star area.

The current Area C director is Mike Macnabb who has not said if he plans to run again.

Shatzko says she supports the rural lifestyle, and her platform will include advocating for the safety and maintenance of the area while building strong partnerships with neighbouring jurisdictions.

“I believe as a leader it’s important not just to state my opinion but also to listen to my constituents and represent their voice and the facts. Anyone who has sat across the table from me knows that I’m not afraid to speak up and that I value listening to diverse ideas. I also want to hear from my constituents about their concerns and opinions.” says Shatzko.

Shatzko says she’s been encouraged to run by a number of people, and says Vernon Mayor Akbal Mund is supporting her bid.

“I am excited to hear that Amanda is running for a political position,” says Mund. “Her involvement in our community and dedication to her beliefs, and being a young female, gives more representation for the residents.”

Shatzko says in her news release, she has helped raise hundreds of thousands of dollars for children’s charities, athletic scholarships, and cultural programs.

Over the past few years, she has donated time as board president of the Arts Council of the North Okanagan, provincial board director for the BC Alliance for Arts and Culture, and co-vice chair of the United Nations Association in Canada (Vancouver).

Shatzko says she also supports youth initiatives, and established local and federal projects with her alma mater high school, Vernon Secondary (who renamed one of their year-end awards after Shatzko).

Shatzko says she has a love for her hometown and has been representing the region since age 12 in international sports and cultural congress meetings.

“I think it would be nice to take all of my experiences and apply it to local government to make a positive difference in my community.”
