Local Group Worries BX Ranch Land Could Be Sold

A citizens group is urging local politicians to keep the remainder of the BX Ranch Lands in public hands.

Terry Donnelly from a Task Force formed last year, says the regional district could make a decision soon, on the remaining 55 hectares on East Vernon Road.

“None of us can see any great advantage to selling it right now. The land will never be worth less. It’s a nice big parcel of land next to the city, the East Hill, which is poor in park land.”

Donnelly says the land could be used for educational purposes, agricultural programs or as a site for a new Vernon Search and Rescue building.

“There is a piece of the property that I think would be quite ideal for that. They’ve budgeted I believe it’s a million dollars for the land. If they use this property, which they already own, they’d have tons of property left.”

He says they have a 15-hundred name petition wanting to keep it in public hands.

The Greater Vernon Advisory Committee put the possible sale of the land on hold back in January, to discuss options.
