A petition organizer says all they want to do is show their appreciation to the men and women of the RCMP.

Local resident Martin von Holst is leading a petition to have February 1st declared RCMP Appreciation Day in BC.

He was asking Vernon council for its support this week.

“So that we can move forward with the petition signed by Canadian citizens and directed to the province of British Columbia, as well to the federal government to ultimately acknowledge February 1st as Royal Canadian Mounted Police Day,” von Holst told council.

Council on a motion from Scott Anderson, voted to support the campaign, after waiving its normal rule to wait until the next meeting to discuss delegation requests.

von Holst says Feb. 1st is the chosen date as that was when the Royal Canadian Mounted Police was formed in 1920.

The petition is expected to be ready to sign by late September in stores and online, with more details to be released later.
