Kamloops and Kelowna set heat records on Thursday — and Vernon came very close to one.

Kelowna reached 37 degrees, breaking the old mark of 36 set in 1978.

Kamloops smashed a record set in 1898, hitting 40.8 degrees.

Armel Castellan, a meteorologist with Environment Canada, says Vernon reached 35.4 degrees, tying the record for Aug. 9, set in 2013.

“And the reason probably that we didn’t quite hit — it could have been a degree or two higher than that — was because of how much smoke is in the air. Smoke filters the sunlight and doesn’t really let as much hit the surface,” Castellan tells Beach Radio News.

Vernon’s all time high temperature is 40 degrees set on July 21st, 1908.

The summer heat will be taking this weekend off.

Castellan says temperatures will drop fairly significantly Saturday due to a low pressure system moving into most of southern BC.

“So instead of being in the supper 30’s — if not 40 degrees — in some of these southern locations, we’re going to be in the upper 20’s. So still fairly warm, but really it’s going to be a be a mixed bag.”

Castellan says rain is expected, with the potential for thunderstorms and strong wind.

He says the skies will start to clear Sunday night, with sunny weather returning Monday, with highs in the upper 20’s.
