You may have seen some of Vernon’s homeless the past few days pulling red wagons instead of pushing shopping carts.

Those are courtesy of Sarah Anderson of Armstrong who felt she had to do something after Vernon Council approved banning shopping carts.

She’s raised money for the wagons from a GoFundMe page she set up.

“We ended up getting fourteen in total. I actually just wanted to do this because I thought that it was beneficial for the people that are living on the streets in Vernon to be able to carry their stuff around. If they’re not going to be able to use the carts then they gotta use something, right.”

Sarah notes there isn’t enough room at shelters to store their belongings and no other space is available right now.

“They needed to be able to have something else, right, and a lot of them have physical disabilities where they can’t carry their own stuff so I mean the wagons have big wheels. They’re easy to carry, they’re easy to manoeuvre in the snow, so that’s why I think they’re going to be a huge benefit.”

Sarah plans to hand out more on the September long weekend and hopes to raise more money by then.

” You know what? If we could reach two thousand I think that would be amazing because we’d be able to go and get a whole bunch more wagons and I’d be able to hand them out on the september long weekend with the help of some volunteers.”

Her GoFundMe page “Wagons For Vernon’s Homeless” sits at one thousand 695 dollars now.
