There are approximately 434 fires currently burning in B.C.

Original Story:

The BC Wildfire Service says there have been over 297 new fires starts in the province since yesterday due to a widespread lightning system that moved through BC.

Weather conditions as well as fuel types have caused some of these fires to become quite active.

Some of those fires are in the North Okanagan and the Thompson areas.

The Monte Lake wildfire, estimated at 22 hectares, is burning approximately 45 kilometres southeast of Kamloops.

Sixteen personnel and 6 pieces of heavy equipment were working it last night with heavy equipment and air tanker and skimmer support.

Crews are also dealing with two fires in the Lumby area.

The Proctor Road fire is estimated at 4 hectares in size and has three firefighters continue to work on it

Three firefighters and one piece of heavy equipment assigned to the Spallumcheen Forest wildfire near Cherryville.

It is estimated at 2.6 hectares.

A fire burning one kilometre east of Mable Lake is about 2 hectares in size.

The Harris Creek fire south of Lumby along the Harris Creek forest service Road is 8 hectares

The Sugar Mountain Fire near Sugar Lake is 30 hectares.

The heightened threat of the Snowy Mountain wildfire has required the Regional District of Okanagan-Similkameen to expand a precautionary Evacuation Alert for in the Cawston area.

The expanded advisory Evacuation Alert includes Crown Land and the Snowy Mountain Protected Area.

The expanded area does not include any additional homes or private property.

It includes all Crown Land and Snowy Mountain Protected Area within Electoral Area “B” west of Highway 3 to the border with the United States.

The purpose of the alert is to prepare all land users in Crown Land west of Cawston to evacuate.

This includes ranchers who are advised to bring cattle out of the area as possible.

The Snowy Mountain wildfire has the potential to move south limiting the ability to get animals out.

It is now estimated at just under 6600 hectares.

About 870 properties in the region’s  electoral areas, Cawston and Keremeos are on evacuation alert.

The Goode’s Creek fire in Okanagan Mountain park near Kelowna remains at 1370 hectares and rated as out of control.

The Placer Mountain fire 37 kilometres south of Princeton covers 2336 hectares and is zero per cent contained.

An evacuation order for Cathedral Lakes Lodge  was issued Wednesday morning because of the fire.

BC Parks has also closed the entire Cathedral Provincial Park and Protected Area for hiking
