Council Objects To Loss Of Tax Break

The federal government will be hearing from the City of Armstrong over a tax break the government is planning to take away from all municipal councils.
Currently, one third of a councillor’s salary is tax exempt, but Ottawa wants to remove that.
Armstrong Mayor Chris Pieper says that’s not a good idea.
“Our stipends are small enough, and we do get a little perk as one-third of it is tax free, and that pays for a lot of the things the councillor’s do on their own hook.”
Pieper says it’s a much needed tax break.
“When you’re running around town, you don’t charge for your vehicle or mileage. You have a lot of meetings you go to, and it’s just part of your stipend.”
Pieper says he doesn’t think most councils will agree with it.
