Kim’s Four-Point Night Powers Vipers to 8-2 Win Over Coquitlam

Nov 7, 2026 | 11:01 PM

Vernon, BC:  The Vernon Vipers bounced back from Friday’s overtime loss in convincing fashion, defeating the Coquitlam Express 8-2 Saturday night at Kal Tire Place.

Mason Kim led the offensive charge with two goals and two assists, earning first-star honours as Vernon recorded its highest goal total of the season.

The eight-goal performance surpassed the Vipers’ previous season high of seven, set against West Kelowna in late September.

Cole Bieksa and Luca Pura each finished with a goal and two assists, while Alex Eklof contributed a goal and an assist. Will Johnson added two helpers, with Jed Lake and Ben Trebicky also scoring for Vernon.

Kim had an opportunity to add to his impressive night but was unable to convert on a second-period penalty shot.

The Vipers opened the scoring just 77 seconds into the contest and added two goals 13 seconds apart later in the opening period.

Coquitlam ran into penalty trouble throughout the game, and Vernon took advantage, scoring twice with the man advantage to help build its lead.

Sammy DiBlasi made 18 saves on 20 shots for the victory, including 14 in the opening period. The Vipers tightened up defensively as the game progressed, limiting the Express to just five shots over the final two periods.

Vernon outshot Coquitlam 38-20 and successfully killed off all three Express powerplay opportunities.

Bradley Schmidt and Shaenen Long scored for Coquitlam.

Long’s goal came under unusual circumstances, as a puck deflected off his leg and into an empty Vernon net during a delayed penalty against the Express. Long was credited with the goal despite being the player responsible for the upcoming penalty.

The victory improves Vernon’s record to 12-4-2-0, keeping the Vipers atop the BCHL’s Interior West Division.

Vernon also improves to 7-0-1 on home ice, while the loss snaps Coquitlam’s six-game winning streak.

The Vipers now prepare for a two-game road trip next weekend, visiting the Cranbrook Bucks on Friday before travelling to Trail to face the Smoke Eaters.
