People are reminded to be safe and obey the law after a 55-year-old Coldstream man was allegedly caught speeding while intoxicated on the highway.

B.C. Highway Patrol said an officer was driving on Highway 6 around 8:30 a.m., Sept. 26, when they were passed by a red Corvette going 120 km/h in an 80 zone.

The officer turned on their lights and siren, but the driver kept going, maintaining the 120 km/h speed even as the speed limit dropped to 50.

The driver then pulled into a mini mart, where the officer stopped him and initiated a Mandatory Alcohol Screening test, which the driver failed.

The Coldstream man was issued a 90-day Immediate Roadside Prohibition, a 20-day notice of impoundment for the Corvette, and a violation ticket for excessive speeding. In total, the fines, impound fees, high-risk driving premiums and licence reinstatement fees were expected to cost the driver around $2,400.

“Police find intoxicated people at all times of the day who are incapable of observing what’s going on around them,” Sergeant Michael McLaughlin with BC Highway Patrol stated.

“This is a graphic illustration of one reason that impaired driving is so dangerous. It’s potentially fatal, not to mention embarrassing and costly, and you don’t want to be that guy.”
