Cannan proposes expanded detox and recovery services

Mayoral candidate Ron Cannan says he would focus on expanding addiction treatment, reducing homelessness and improving public safety if elected.

Cannan says one of his first priorities would be working with Interior Health to add up to 10 medically supported detox beds in Kelowna within his first 100 days as mayor.

He also proposes a community safety and recovery table involving the RCMP, Interior Health, BC Housing, Indigenous partners, businesses, non-profits and treatment providers.

Cannan wants the city to strengthen shelter-diversion programs aimed at helping people avoid chronic homelessness and develop more second-stage sober housing for people leaving detox and treatment.

His longer-term plan includes exploring a regional “Campus of Care” that would bring together addiction and mental-health treatment, detox, recovery housing, counselling and employment supports.

Cannan also says he would work with Kelowna RCMP to assess policing needs and improve co-ordination between police, bylaw officers, first responders and health workers.

He says the city should track outcomes including homelessness, access to treatment, shelter use and repeat interactions with police and emergency services.
