Ministerial Meetings

Coldstream officials advocated on a number of topics at UBCM

Local leaders held a series of meetings to advocate on a range of topics during the Union of B.C. Municipalities (UBCM) conference earlier this month.

Coldstream mayor, councillors, and staff met with a number of provincial ministers and their staff to discuss topics and advocate on points relevant to their stations.

Meeting with the Minister of Finance, Coldstream officials brought forward the topic of a UBCM resolution to create a Farm-Use Subclass for Property Taxation.

The resolution called for the province to establish a taxation subclass that would give local governments an additional tool to distinguish large-scale, industrial agricultural operations from smaller-scale and lower-impact farm uses. The subclass would also be optional and up to local governments to implement based on local circumstances and community needs.

During the conference, Coldstream met with the Minister of Forests to advocate for increased investment to expand the early wildfire detection camera network, especially in high-risk wildland-urban interface areas.

In highlighting Kalamalka Lake Provincial Park and the surrounding residential areas as a priority, the municipal leaders put forward that the network and detection technology should be integrated with local emergency operations, evacuation planning and wildfire response. That request built off a UBCM resolution sponsored by Coldstream in 2025 which called for early wildfire detection technology be implemented in wildland-urban interface areas.

In meeting with the Minister of Environment of Parks, Coldstream brought forward a discussion proposing stronger environmental oversight of high-risk onsite sewerage systems. The district noted the oversight was especially needed where the systems could affect municipal drinking water sources.

The proposal, based off another Coldstream resolution from the previous year, asked the province establish a risk-based review process for high volume onsite sewerage systems, and consider these safeguards as the province reviews and modernizes its regulations.

Coldstream also met with the Minister of Housing and Municipal Affairs to advocate for increased and sustainable provincial funding for public libraries.

A report from the district said Coldstream would continue to advocate on these points to ensure these and other needs, concerns and interests of Coldstream residents are heard and considered.
