B.C. NDP leader vows to ‘stand up for British Columbians’ in Vernon visit

David Eby made a campaign stop in Vernon Saturday evening where he pledged to address issues people in the province are facing.

The leader of the B.C. NDP, alongside local candidates, visited the campaign office for Harwinder Sandhu in a campaign tour stop.

During the visit Eby asserted his party would tackle the more pressing issues British Columbians face.

“Our plan to support British Columbians is really simple: we’re going to stand up,” Eby said during the rally surrounded by supporters.

“We’re going to stand up to [U.S. President Donald] Trump, of course. We’re going to stand up to the oil and gas companies. We’re going to stand up to the big five grocery chains. We’re going to stand up to the developers who built the houses that haven’t sold. We’re going to say that all of you need to recognize the moment we’re in and support families, be with families, because the B.C. NDP will have families’ backs throughout this challenging time.”

Eby vowed the NDP planned to cut gas prices by 30 cents per litre, as the B.C. Utilities Commission had granted approval of an additional 20 cent price reduction on top of the previous promise to lower the price per litre by 10 cents, if he’s elected.

He also took the opportunity to rally against his opposition, stating the B.C. Conservative Party was more focused on social issues, such as repealing the Declaration of Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act, requiring time to pass through the courts and costs that would have to come from cuts to healthcare, education, and other programs.

“The B.C. NDP will not, on the backs of British Columbians, balance the budget,” Eby told his supporters.

“We’re going to stand up, and we’re going to support families with strong public services, and we’re going to grow our economy, just like we have been doing.”

As part of the stop in Vernon Eby also said he hoped to see “the Okanagan turn orange” and praised the local B.C. NDP candidates, Harwinder Sandhu, Vernon-Lumby; Binny Boparai, Kelowna-Lake Country-Coldstream ; Loyal Woolridge, Kelowna Centre; and Gloria Morgan, Salmon Arm-Shuswap.

Voting day for the provincial election is October 24.
