Vipers Score Four Shorthanded Goals in 7-3 Win Over Warriors

Vernon, BC:  The Vernon Vipers scored four shorthanded goals to defeat the West Kelowna Warriors 7-3 in their home opener Saturday night before more than 2,200 fans.

The victory was Vernon’s third straight, improving its record to 3-1.

Evan Schulha scored his first two BCHL goals during the same first-period penalty kill. Will Johnson and Jed Lake added shorthanded goals in the third period, giving Vernon four of its seven goals while playing a man short.

Mykolas Skadauskas, Tommy Karmiris and Toms Trockis also scored for the Vipers.

Vernon killed all five West Kelowna power plays and has now successfully defended all 14 shorthanded situations this season. Its power play finished 1-for-4, extending a streak of at least one power-play goal in every game through four contests.

Emmanuel Chan and Olivier Chan led West Kelowna with three points each. Ethan Sawyer stopped 20 of the 26 shots he faced.

The Warriors dropped to 2-2, concluding a two-game road trip in which they were outscored 15-6 following an 8-3 loss in Prince George Friday.

Vernon continues its homestand Saturday, October 3, against the Salmon Arm Silverbacks. Puck drop is scheduled for 6 p.m.
