Canada names Montreal Victoire’s Kori Cheverie head coach of women’s team

CALGARY — Kori Cheverie has been named Canada’s head coach for the upcoming IIHF women’s world championship in Denmark.

Hockey Canada announced the news on Thursday, saying the Montréal Victoire head coach will be behind the bench for the 2026-27 season.

Cheverie is no stranger to the national team, having won Olympic gold as assistant coach at the Beijing Games in 2022 and helping the squad to first-place finishes at the world championships in 2021, 2022 and 2024.

She will work alongside assistant coaches Caroline Ouellette, who’s also her assistant in Montreal, and Kris Sparre, head coach of the PWHL’s new expansion team in Hamilton.

Canada will begin the world championships on Nov. 6 when they open Group B play against Sweden. The group also includes Finland, Denmark and Japan.

The Canadians took silver at last year’s world championships in Czechia and at the 2026 Milan Cortina Olympics in February.

Cheverie said in a release that she’s “incredibly proud” and honoured to lead the national team.

“Growing up playing hockey in New Glasgow, Nova Scotia, I had big dreams of one day being part of Team Canada,” she said. “I didn’t know then that my path would be through coaching, and I am extremely grateful that this journey has now given me the opportunity to lead this program. I am excited to work alongside an amazing group of athletes and staff as we continue building together.”

The coaching staff were selected by Danièle Sauvageau, general manager of Canada’s women’s hockey program, Scott Salmond, senior vice-president of high performance and hockey operations, and director of hockey operations Dylan Rockwell.

Hockey Canada also announced Thursday that former Vegas Golden Knights head coach Bruce Cassidy will serve as a special assistant to Sauvageau for the 2026-27 season, while Michael Hirshfeld of the Ottawa Charge and Manon Rhéaume of the PWHL’s expansion team in Detroit will act as assistant general managers.
