Kelowna Art Gallery unveils immersive Kookum Lounge installation

The Kelowna Art Gallery’s courtyard is being transformed into an immersive installation exploring Indigenous architecture, storytelling and refuge.

Kookum Lounge, created by Anishinaabe interdisciplinary artist and curator Jaimie Isaac of Sagkeeng First Nation, opens Saturday and will remain on display through September 2027.

The installation takes the form of a tipi, with its covering made from upcycled water-resistant sails sewn together. Isaac says the sails reference the movement of settlers to Turtle Island across the water.

Inside, insulated tarps are patchworked into flooring inspired by temporary shelters, while floral Kookum-scarf fabric is layered over top as a reference to blankets and matriarchal comfort.

The work was previously presented during the 2023 Nuit Blanche Winnipeg festival, where it was installed along the city’s waterfront.

The Kelowna installation opens with a free public reception Saturday from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Kelowna Art Gallery, 1315 Water St.

Kookum Lounge will be accessible in the gallery courtyard from Sept. 19, 2026, through September 2027.
