B.C. man gets 22 years in jail for historical sex crimes on Vancouver Island

Aug 20, 2026 | 3:36 PM

PORT ALBERNI — Police on Vancouver Island say a man has been sentenced to 22 years behind bars after being convicted of multiple sex offences.

Port Alberni RCMP say Shaun Pater was sentenced last week for sexual interference against a person under 14, two counts of sexual interference against persons under 16 and one count of sexual assault.

RCMP Insp. Kim Bruce says in a statement that the “historical” offences spanned several years.

Bruce says investigators had to exercise “an exceptional degree” of skill to bring the case before the court.

A police statement commends victims and witnesses for their courage, with Bruce saying their participation in the case resulted in convictions that may bring “some measure of closure.”

Publication bans prevent the sharing of information that could identify victims or witnesses.
