Drug alert issued for fake tablets in Vernon

A drug alert has been issued for a substance found circulating in Vernon.

Interior Health warned that fake Percocets or perks found in the North Okanagan community does not contain oxycodone but instead contains Fentanyl or its analogues.

These drugs pose a high risk of overdose.

“Fentanyl is up to 75 times stronger than oxycodone,” the health authority stated.

“The quantity of fentanyl (or analog) in these tablets is unknown and can vary from one tablet to another.”

People were urged to be aware of the risk of fakes when not purchasing tablets from a pharmacy.

IH also advised people to have their drugs checked; to not mix with other substances, including alcohol; to use them at an Overdose Prevention Site; to start with a small amount and wait before taking more; to carry Naloxone and know how to use it; and to use the LifeGuard app.
