Evacuation Alert lifted for La Casa Wildfire

The Evacuation Alert for the 507 households in the La Casa area has now been lifted.

Central Okanagan Emergency Management made the announcement at 11:30 a.m. Sunday.

The wildfire (previously referred to as La Casa Wildfire) prompted the evacuation alert Saturday.

Although the five hectare-plus wildfire remains classified as out of control, significant progress has been made by firefighting crews in reducing fire activity and protecting the area.

BC Wildfire Service reported crews remained overnight with support from helicopter equipped with a tank and night vision imaging system to allow operations to continue overnight. On Sunday crews were supported by a helicopter and local fire department and are working on mop up and patrolling hot spots.

On Sunday morning crews were observing Rank 1 and 2 fire behaviour, meaning a smoldering ground fire with some open flame and a slow rate of spread.

Helicopters are actioning this wildfire using the Okanagan Lake water access. Boaters should vacate the area where aerial resources are operating to ensure public and responder safety and to mitigate interference to suppression operations.

Residents may continue to notice lingering smoke, visible hot spots and ongoing movement of firefighting equipment in the area as crews complete their work. If you observe fire activity outside of designated or expected areas, report wildfires by calling *5555, or dial 911 for fires within city limits.

Members of the public are asked to avoid the wildfire-impacted area unless necessary so emergency responders can safely complete mop-up operations and respond to any remaining hot spots. Boaters are also asked to stay well clear of the affected area on the lake to ensure the safety of emergency personnel and support ongoing response efforts.

While the Evacuation Alert has been lifted, this incident serves as an important reminder that wildfire season is ongoing and conditions can change quickly.
