Vernon business owner looking to win seat on City Council

A local business owner will throw his hat in the ring for the upcoming municipal election. 

David Scarlatescu, owner of the Fig Bistro and co-founder of Millennium Valley Productions, announced he would run in the Local General Election for a seat on Vernon City Council.

Scarlatescu has lived in Vernon for the last 20 years since moving to the city at eight years old, and spent nearly a decade building a business in the downtown core and giving back to the community.

“This city raised me. It’s where I grew up, where I built my business, and where my wife and I have chosen to put down roots. I’m running because I want to keep serving the community that’s given me so much.”

Scarlatescu’s campaign will focus on supporting small businesses, helping young people build their lives so they can stay in the city, and pursuing growth that adds housing and strengthens infrastructure without impacting the feel of Vernon.

Along with launching his restaurant business in 2017, first called The Sprouted Fig but later renamed as The Fig, Scarlatescu co-created and produced Hello Okanagan, a locally made series that ran over 150 episodes that delivered over half-a-million dollars in media value to local businesses and community organizations at no cost.

In 2020, The Fig also started a free food program for seniors unable to leave their homes that had to date seen over 1,000 meals delivered. Scatlatescu and his business also organized free meals for wildfire evacuees and firefighters during wildfire seasons, and provides free meals for veterans each Remembrance Day.

The municipal election goes October 17.
