Air quality improves across Okanagan after wildfire smoke blankets region

Jul 24, 2026 | 11:03 AM

Air quality conditions are improving across the Okanagan after wildfire smoke blanketed much of the region Thursday, creating hazy skies and unhealthy conditions for some residents.

Smoke from multiple wildfires burning across British Columbia moved into the Southern Interior, affecting communities throughout the valley and reducing visibility in some areas.

The air quality index in Vernon and Kelowna is now in the moderate range, with readings expected to remain mostly in the 70s and 80s through the day. Under the air quality index system, readings below 99 are considered moderate.

Moderate air quality generally means the air is acceptable for most people, though those who are more sensitive to air pollution, including young children, older adults and people with respiratory conditions, may still experience some effects.

Conditions are expected to improve compared with Thursday, with shifting winds helping to disperse some of the smoke. However, wildfire activity across the province means air quality can change quickly depending on fire behaviour, weather patterns and wind direction.

Temperatures are expected to climb into the low 30s across the Okanagan today, with dry conditions continuing.

The improving air quality means outdoor plans across the region this weekend should be more comfortable, though residents are encouraged to check local conditions before spending extended periods outside.
