Evacuation Alert for La Casa Wildfire, significant progress made

The La Casa Wildfire was measured at 5.18 hectares late Saturday.

In an update, Central Okanagan Emergency Management said while significant progress has been made on the blaze, residents in the area will continue to see flames, smoke and firefighting activity as BC Wildfire continues ground and aerial operations overnight.

Fire behaviour can appear more active after dark and may be visible from surrounding areas. This activity is expected and is being closely monitored by crews on scene. If you observe fire activity outside of designated or expected areas, report wildfires by calling *5555, or dial 911 for fires within city limits.

Residents who left the area may return home. The muster centre at the Westbank Lions Community Centre has now closed. Those within the alert area should remain prepared to leave at a moment’s notice should conditions change.

The Evacuation Alert for the La Casa area, including La Casa Lakeside Resort and La Casa Cottages, remains in place overnight and will be reevaluated Sunday based on fire conditions.

Due to a nearby wildfire, residents in the La Casa area (including La Casa Lakeside Resort and La Casa Cottages) on the northwest side of Okanagan Lake are on Evacuation Alert.

BC Wildfire Service said they were responding with ground and aerial resources alongside North Westside Fire Department. Skimmers and helicopters are actioning the blaze using the Okanagan Lake water access.

Boaters should vacate the area where skimmers and helicopters are operating to ensure public and responder safety and to mitigate interference to suppression operations. Crews are currently observing Rank 2 and 3 fire behaviour, meaning a surface fire with open flame and a slow to moderate rate of spread.

The fire was discovered Saturday and rated as out of control, which means it is spreading or it is anticipated to spread beyond the current perimeter, or control line.

A muster centre has been opened at Westbank Lions Community Centre, located at 2466 Main Street in West Kelowna, for residents who have left the area surrounding the La Casa Wildfire. Volunteers with Emergency Support Services (ESS) will be on hand to provide direction.

Central Okanagan referred the public to the interactive map on coemergency.ca/map where street address can be searched.

Residents in the area are advised to be ready to leave their homes at a moment’s notice. They should be prepared to be away from home for an extended period, make arrangements for their pets, and pack essential items such as medicines and important documents.
