Air quality improves across Okanagan after wildfire smoke blankets region

Air quality conditions are improving across the Okanagan after wildfire smoke blanketed much of the region Thursday, creating hazy skies and unhealthy conditions for some residents.

Smoke from multiple wildfires burning across British Columbia moved into the Southern Interior, affecting communities throughout the valley and reducing visibility in some areas.

The air quality index in Vernon and Kelowna is now in the moderate range, with readings expected to remain mostly in the 70s and 80s through the day. Under the air quality index system, readings below 99 are considered moderate.

Moderate air quality generally means the air is acceptable for most people, though those who are more sensitive to air pollution, including young children, older adults and people with respiratory conditions, may still experience some effects.
