Vernon’s mayor urges residents to fill out census

May 26, 2026 | 6:03 AM

The Mayor of Vernon is asking the public to make sure they have filled out the census, even though the deadline has passed..

Victor Cumming made the plea ahead of the regular council meeting Monday, May 25.

Following the meeting the mayor reiterated the importance of filling out the form when speaking with Vernon Matters, as the data collected can provide critical information to all levels of government, including municipalities.

“If you do the simple form, it’s going to talk about population and it’s going to talk about housing, both which are critical things for us in our planning and decision making, both are absolutely critical,” Cumming explained.

“Please fill out the census form. Give us the data we need for both housing and population if you got the short form.

“If you got the longer form, then that helps us with a number of things in economic development.”

The deadline to fill out the census was May 12.

Completion of the 2026 Census is mandatory under the Statistics Act, and anyone who does not take part could face a financial penalty.
