Vernon Council considers changes to meeting dates

May 15, 2026 | 6:00 AM

Vernon may be holding its City Council Meetings on a new schedule.

At the meeting May 11, Mayor Victor Cumming proposed that, starting in November following the municipal election, the council meetings be held on Tuesdays, rather than have the Committee of the Whole meetings at 8:30 a.m. and the Regular Council Meetings at 1:30 p.m. on Mondays.

“The rationale in terms of timing is, for people planning to run [as a candidate], then they’d know which day the future council meetings are on, that’s why we’re bringing it forward now instead of bringing it forward in the next council,” Cumming explained in the council chambers. He added the change would also line up with meetings from other organizations across the Okanagan before going further into his reasoning for changing the dates.

“The challenge of Mondays is it requires both staff and council to work on the weekend, particularly on Sunday, before a Monday council meeting, and it means we’re asking our directors to be available every second weekend. It seems that if we could shift it to Tuesday then that kind of activity and questions and clarification would happen on a work day as opposed to it happening on Sundays,” he said.

A report presented by staff alongside Cumming’s motion said the change would also accommodate statutory holidays that fall on a Monday.

Coucillor Kari Gares said she appreciated the work done by staff over the weekends but stated she liked having the meetings on a Monday, and suggested that if there were a change to the schedule it should instead be to have two meetings a week held later in the day to accommodate the work done by staff and make it easier for the general public to attend.

Vernon’s Chief Administrative Officer, Carey Herd, responded to Gares’s comment by stating the current schedule does put strain on staff, but noted a follow up report with options for changes that included both Cumming’s and Gares’s proposals could come before council at a later time for further deliberation.

Councillor Brian Guy then stated he would like to see meetings moved to Tuesdays so it would not require staff and councillors to work more during regular office hours instead of over the weekends. Councillor Brian Quiring also agreed the current schedule sees more work downloaded onto staff and councillors over the weekends and that the change would be an improvement for everyone.

Vernon Council directed staff to prepare a report with options for changes to the meeting schedules, which will be brought forward for discussion at the meeting May 25.

Council has also voted in favour of cancelling the meetings on August 13 and October 17, and moving the meeting on July 13 to July 20.
