RDNO urges caution around moving water

With the recent weather causing water to move more quickly through rivers, the regional district is urging people to be cautious.

The Regional District of North Okanagan said warm temperatures, ongoing snowmelt, and precipitation cause water levels to rise rapidly, noting that fast-moving, high water can create unpredictable and dangerous conditions.

The RDNO asked that people stay back from stream edges as fast moving water can erode river banks; respect the power of moving water as even calm-looking water can conceal strong currents; follow all warning signs and advisories; be prepared when recreating outdoors by having a communication device and packing essential items; and use proper equipment on the water including a properly fitter personal flotation device.

“Swift-moving water can pose a serious risk, even for experienced swimmers and boaters”, Alastair Crick, RDNO Protective Services Manager, said.
