RCMP warn of surge in illegal e-bike use in West Kelowna

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police are stepping up enforcement as high-powered e-bikes and electric dirt bikes become more common in West Kelowna.

Police say complaints are rising, particularly involving youth riding on roads, sidewalks and trails with machines that don’t meet legal standards. Cpl. Tyrone Wilton says the issue is expected to grow with warmer weather. “We’re anticipating more riders and more complaints as we head into spring and summer,” he said.

Under B.C.’s Motor Vehicle Act, e-bikes must meet strict limits on speed and motor power and include working pedals. Anything beyond that is considered a motor vehicle and requires licensing and insurance.

Police warn riders could face fines, vehicle seizures and even criminal charges, while parents could be held liable in the event of a crash. Targeted enforcement is now underway in several neighbourhoods as officers work to curb unsafe riding.
