Kelowna chamber backs key measures in federal spring update
The Kelowna Chamber of Commerce says the federal government’s spring economic update includes targeted measures that could help stabilize the economy and address challenges in the Okanagan.
The chamber points to a focus on workforce shortages, private-sector growth and cutting red tape as positive steps, along with efforts to improve competitiveness and reduce internal trade barriers.
CEO George Greenwood says a national push to promote skilled trades stands out, as labour shortages continue to strain construction and housing. “The tuition and fee barriers to get Canadians trained to Red Seal level are hurting the housing market, builders, Canadian homeowners, and the economy,” he said.
The chamber also supports moves to reduce housing barriers, lower CPP contributions and strengthen economic projections, but is calling for clear timelines on a return to balanced budgets.
