No Decision Yet On Opening Boat Launches

Jul 6, 2017 | 6:23 AM

Most of Greater Vernon’s boat launches remain closed — and that could the case into next week.

Coldstream’s three launches on Kalamalka Lake remain closed until further notice, due to the high levels.

The Kekuli Bay launch, run by the province, has been closed since last week.

RDNO Board chair Bob Fleming plans to get an update on the Paddlewheel Park launch at today’s G-VAC meeting.

“The water’s still very high. Whether it’s low enough for us to consider opening Paddlewheel or not I don’t know, but I’ll certainly bring it up.”

Fleming says there are things to investigate at Paddlewheel.

“The on ramp to the wharf was under water which was one of the issues from an access point of view. I don’t think we suffered any damage at that location.”

He says the simple fact is, it may be too soon to open the launches.

“Everybody’s obviously concerned that people don’t go crazy, go out on the water and start creating wakes all over the place and adding to the misery because I know for sure the water level is still way above the historic flood.”

The City of Vernon has kept its boat launches open on Okanagan Lake.
