Showing Our Colours

I got a phone call asking if I was wearing anything Canada while on the air this morning. Yes, as a matter of fact, I have a Canadian flag in the microphone clamp I’ll leave here for Melanie O’Hara and Frank Martina later…as well as wearing my Limited Edition Canada ball cap. Frank always wears his very busy Canadian red and white boxers on Canada Day…but he wears them over his jeans…so there’s no mistaking he’s being patriotic.

I took 3 of these caps to Cuba a few years ago, wearing this one and gave 2 of them to a couple of shoe-less and shirt-less, rag tag little boys tossing around a baseball with no leather on it…yes if you’ve ever seen the inside of a baseball…it was basically a ball of string.

They told me in Spanish that they were from an orphanage from out of town and just came in with the group for a quick visit to the Havana amusement park as a treat.

Being Canadian…first off I told them they shouldn’t be talking to strangers, then I gave each one of them a ball cap.  By then the nun supervisors were over to see me, thanked me and gathered up their last 2 on the bus.  I know they still have those ball caps…just as much as I still have those memories.  Happy Canada Day all…!
