Coldstream property taken off the market, will be turned into a proper green space

An undeveloped property that the District of Coldstream had planned to sell has been taken off the market and will be turned into a proper park.

The green space at the corner of Pointe Sage Park and Pointe Sage Drive was put on the market, much to the dismay of local residents who rallied together to oppose the sale.

The residents, led by Mike Sanford, presented a delegation to Coldstream Council at the meeting Monday, Dec. 8, opposing the sale by stating that it was the only green space in the area and that the neighbours were not consulted in the decision to sell the piece of land.

After hearing the concerns from the residents, Coldstream Council voted to retain the property.

Speaking with Vernon Matters, Sanford said he was very pleased with council’s decision.

“It’s kind of a green space for our subdivision of 31 lots, plus a 10-unit townhome complex,” Sanford explained.

“So it was a huge win for us.”

He added there were no large parks or school grounds nearby for people to access, and that the residents just wanted a place for people to recreate in their own neighbourhood.

Coldstream Council also directed staff to work with the neighbours and consider what improvements could be made to the site to meet the residents’ needs.

“[We want] turf and irrigation, park benches, some trees for shade near the benches, maybe some grasses,” Sanford told Vernon Matters.

“Just something simple to make it a super inviting place for moms with their strollers and their babies and young children where they can just run around the green space or do whatever, play catch. It’s just more or less having, in a subdivision where you are zero-scape and you don’t have room for a backyard with grass for kids to play, it just offers a real safe environment for kids and grandchildren in the neighbourhood to have a place.”

He said the property would not be suitable for a playground structure, but noted that was not their goal as the residents just wanted to enhance how the park was already used by kids wanting to play, people taking their dogs on a walk, and neighbours using it a space to meet and catch up with each other.

Sanford added he had a lot of respect for council and their willingness to listen and follow the will of the residents.

A timeline for building out the property as a proper park and green space will be set at a later date.
