Sandbag Drop Off at Landfills

Jun 22, 2017 | 9:14 AM

Anyone within the Regional District of North Okanagan looking to get rid of sandbags now has a place to go.

RDNO board chair Bob Fleming says the region’s landfills will take them.

“ The three main landfill sites, Armstrong, Spall, Greater Vernon and the Lumby landfill will all be taking that material free. It`s considered fill and will be used just for cover at the landfills.“

For now, you have to find your own way to get the sandbags to the landfills.

“Also an indication there may be a provincial program that may assist with transport, but that`s an application process and as soon as we have more information on that we`ll try to make it available as well. Right now, the onus would be on whoever has them to organize the transportation to the landfills.“

Fleming says anyone ¸dropping off sandbags will find it`s an easy process.

“The bags themselves will be dealt with by landfill staff and the sand will just be accumulated. We`re doing it where you don`t have to go over the scale, in other words, it`ll go into the area for instance where the yard waste goes.“

He says it doesn`t matter whether the sandbags are dry or wet from flood water.
