Provincial program looks to support agriculture through water protection

The province is offering aid to farmers facing challenges due to drought.

The B.C. Government opened the application intake process for its Agriculture Water Infrastructure Program Tuesday, Nov. 18.

The program provides funds for projects aimed at supporting and improving water availability, storage, efficiency and sustainability.

The province says these projects could help support food security and production, while also benefiting stream flows and aquatic ecosystems.

“With a changing climate, drought is an ongoing concern to the success of our agricultural communities,” Lana Popham, Minister of Agriculture and Food, stated.

“That’s why we’re continuing to help B.C.’s farmers and ranchers access water with new and improved equipment, storage facilities and other technologies that keep crops growing and producing the food we all rely on and enjoy.”

The program has two funding streams that eligible farmers and communities could access:

Producer Projects: Farm-based upgrades to water systems and storage, including dams and conveyance systems
Strategic Projects: Community-led initiatives focused on supporting strategic and collaborative solutions in areas with high water-use conflict, risk to aquatic ecosystems, existing and potential risks of agricultural water shortage, and/or opportunities to expand water availability

People can apply for the Agriculture Water Infrastructure Program funding online here. The deadline to apply is December 18.
