A tournament will be bringing some elite pickleball players to Vernon next week.

The first ever Okanagan Open will be held at the Vernon Air Conditioning, Plumbing and Electrical Services Pickleball Complex at Marshall Field Oct. 15-18.

The event will see over 400 players take to the courts, including some professional and national-level athletes. The elite players taking part in the Okanagan Open are Chayton Hauberg (Team Canada U18 National Team), Jacob Bolkowy (Team Canada U18 National Team), Kim Layton (#5 ranked female player in Canada and National Team member), and Anna Dyanchenko (#3 ranked female player in Canada and National Team member).

Hauberg, who is from Canada, will return to his home court after representing Canada at the World Cup in Vietnam.

“Bringing this level of professional talent to the Okanagan completely changes the dynamic of the event,” said Tournament Director Richard Chambers.

“Fans are going to see an incredible display of power, speed and strategy. Having premier male and female pros leading the field alongside local national team heroes sets a benchmark for what high-level sport can be in our valley.”

The tournament will also have a  $10,000 total prize purse.

People were encouraged to go out to watch the games and cheer on the competitors over the course of the inaugural tournament. The schedule can be found at the Vernon Pickleball Association website.
