Coldstream Starts Park Upgrade Plans

Jun 21, 2017 | 9:20 AM

Facilities in parks in Coldstream could be getting a facelift.

Mayor Jim Garlick says council’s committee of the whole discussed the matter at its meeting Monday night.

” The main thing I think we’re looking at our parks and how we replace the hard items in parks. Everything from wharves to picnic benches to buildings.”.

Garlick points to Lavington Park as an example where several items need to be considered.

” Washrooms, a pool, change rooms, storage. So we just want to talk with the association out there, the community association and get some information from them in order to make sure our ideas match up with theirs.”

Garlick says the same process will be done with other parks.

While nothing is on the books yet, the Mayor says organizing now will save for the future.

” So, what we’re trying to do here is incorporate into our taxes and plan for the future for the replacement of these items as they become older and they have to be redone”

The idea is to tax over time.

“We’ve done that with our pavement management plan, here with our buildings in Coldstream and now we’re doing it with the parks so that we make
sure that we’re covering those costs rather than letting everything fail and then go oh, oh where are we going to get the money from.”

The last budget had a half per cent increase to to start the process.

Budgets over the next couple of years will also include provisions for the future.
