Kelowna community urged to wear pink at court for Bailey McCourt
Kelowna residents are being asked to show their support in pink as a sentencing hearing takes place for the man accused of killing Bailey McCourt in a broad-daylight attack this past July.
James Plover, McCourt’s estranged husband, faces sentencing for domestic assault and uttering threats, convictions handed down just hours before McCourt was fatally attacked in a Spall Road parking lot. Bail was not revoked at the time, and Plover left the courthouse that morning. The following day, he was charged with second-degree murder.
McCourt’s death has renewed calls for stricter bail rules, including the proposed “Bailey’s Law,” which would automatically classify the killing of an intimate partner as first-degree murder and prevent release of those with prior convictions for similar offences within five years. Premier David Eby has expressed support for the legislation.
On Monday afternoon, the McCourt family and community supporters plan to wear pink “Justice for Bailey” shirts and fill the courtroom in her memory. Organizers, including Mamas for Mamas, said the gathering will also include a walk through downtown Kelowna to honour McCourt and her two daughters.
