Work To Be Done By End of November

Vernon Creek Naturalization in Polson Park set to be done on time

The Polson Park Vernon Creek Naturalization project remains on track to be completed by the end of the month.

That’s according to a city staff report, which stated that crews were working on floodplain grading, irrigation and installation, and riparian planting for the week of November 10-14.

Crews were also preparing to install a fence along the gravel multi-use path in the park at the bottom of Hospital Hill. That fence would be similar to the one at Becker Park.

The work must be done by the end of November to align with regulations for working within waterways as set out by the Department of Fisheries and Oceans.

The project aims to reduce flood risks within the park, as well as enhance the natural environment and fish habitats in and around the creek.

“I know there’s some people who think [the project] is really poor, I had a person meet me [Monday] morning while I was out for a walk telling me what a poor idea it was, but I think they’ve done a tremendous job,” Mayor Victor Cumming told Vernon Matters.

“It’s improved the groundwater situation fairly significantly and it definitely improved it for fish. It’s a really good improvement.”

Though the work was scheduled to be done on time, it was not yet known it it had been kept on budget.

“They haven’t told us it isn’t,” Cumming said.

“At this point we don’t know.”

The final cost was expected to be known once the work had wrapped up.

Key user groups have been involved and engaged throughout the project including the Lawn Bowling Association, Kalamalka Fly Fishers Society, and the Japanese Cultural Centre.
