Kelowna business leaders to discuss impact of short-term rental rules

Nov 12, 2025 | 10:11 AM

Kelowna business owners, short-term rental hosts, restauranteurs, tourism operators and elected officials will meet Wednesday evening to discuss the impact of British Columbia’s short-term rental regulations on the city’s tourism economy.

The discussion will take place at Basil & Mint, 3799 Lakeshore Rd., from 5:30 to 7 p.m., featuring brief remarks from participants followed by a group conversation. Organizers say the focus will be on economic challenges that have emerged since the provincial short-term rental rules took effect in May 2024.

The regulations, including a provincial registration process introduced this year, have coincided with reduced accommodation availability and higher hotel rates, which local business owners say have led to fewer visitors and declining sales. These challenges come even as Canada’s tourism sector posted a record-breaking summer in 2025, generating nearly $60 billion in revenue.

Participants will also include Gavin Dew, MLA for Kelowna–Mission and critic for small business and innovation and Kelowna city councillor Ron Cannan.
