A statue has been erected in Jack Robertson Memorial Park in Kelowna in honour of the park’s namesake.

The statue features a salvaged-wood bear sculpture, as well as a likeness of Jack Robertson.

Robertson was a veteran who died in the 1950s while helping build the park, and the statue was unveiled Sunday, Nov. 9, ahead of Remembrance Day.

“Jack Robertson’s story lives on as a powerful reminder of the courage and sacrifice of veterans who served our country abroad and returned home to continue serving their communities with that same sense of duty,” Mayor Tom Dyas said in a release.

“As we unveil this sculpture, just days before Remembrance Day, we honour Jack — and every veteran whose service, both overseas and here at home, helped build the freedoms we cherish today.”

The statue was created by local artist Kamron Garbe. He has created other salvaged-wood sculptures in Kelowna including a blue heron and kokanee salmon at Sarsons Beach Park, and an owl at Lombardy Park.
